Here's what one looks like
I was climbing with a friend recently, and he told me he doesn't like to lead hard routes because he doesn't like falling. But a lot of top climbers practice falling on purpose.
Guiding works the same way. You don't get more confident by hoping the hard moments get easier. You get confident by practicing for the ones you're likely to face: the big decision, the difficult guest, the group that stops listening.
Confidence comes from competence. Here's one way to build it on your next trip...
Hi, I'm Colby.
I started guiding in 2004, backpacking and rock climbing. Since then my work has taken me to 6 continents, from safaris to sea kayaking to polar sailing. Today I lead expeditions and train guide teams for adventure operators, non-profits and universities.
Most guides are hired for their outdoor skills. The best ones are known for how they lead people. That's what I write about.
