The Best Investment in Adventure Travel? Your Guides.

We talk a lot in adventure travel about investing in new products, equipment, infrastructure, and novel guest experiences.

I’d love to see the same level of intention applied to the people actually delivering those experiences.

As someone who spends a lot of time training and working alongside guides, I see just how much talent, judgment, and care goes into this profession. I also see guides who genuinely want to get better, take on more responsibility, and build long-term careers in the industry.

I don’t believe better tourism comes primarily from distinctive trip offerings or fancy equipment. It comes from experienced guides who connect travelers to place and help them learn more about themselves and the world around them.

Guides are the real product. Everything else is decoration.

There’s an uncomfortable second half to that idea: if great guides can’t afford to build a life adjacent to the places they guide, eventually the guest experience suffers too.

If we want world-class tourism, we need to build an industry where guides and tourism workers are supported not just professionally, but in their ability to build sustainable lives in the communities where they work.

Better pay, benefits, meaningful professional development, and real opportunities for career growth are the cornerstones of sustainable guiding careers.
